STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike early on Tuesday killed at least six people at the Nuseirat refugee camp, residents and hospital officials said.

The camp is located in a central area of the Gaza Strip.

“We heard the sound of a very strong explosion, with a red light, and the whole world was filled with dust in a minute,” Mahmoud Hajjo, who lived next door to one of the homes hit in the strike, told The Associated Press.

“We went out into the street and found bodies and body parts thrown out, and massive destruction.”

Residents said they were searching for at least six people trapped under the rubble of a home that was hit in the strike, trying to clear everything with their bare hands.

Several floors, walls, and ceilings of buildings had collapsed.

The Israel-Hamas war was triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel in which about 1,200 people — mostly civilians — were killed and around 250 people were taken hostage.

More than 37,100 people have been killed in the fighting in Gaza, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.

The war has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinians who are facing widespread hunger.
