STORYLINE:
Ukrainian fans arrived Monday at Munich’s Football Arena stadium ahead of their team’s first match in the European Championship against Romania.
Fans wrapped in Ukrainian flags and holding banners stressed their support for their country on and off the pitch, with Ukraine competing in the tournament against the backdrop of the war at home.
"This is a wonderful celebration of football, both European and global, but during this celebration, we must not forget that we are citizens of Ukraine and of a country currently at war. And each of us, no matter where we are, must help our native land," one fan told the Associated Press.
Ukraine is looking to back up its most successful campaign to date, having reached the quarterfinals at Euro 2020 where it was eliminated by eventual runner-up England.
Ahead of the match on Monday the Ukrainian football federation unveiled an installation in Munich of a stadium stand destroyed in the war back home to highlight the ongoing conflict.
Parts of a stand from Kharkiv’s Sonyachny stadium that was built for Euro 2012 — which Ukraine co-hosted — was displayed in a square in Munich ahead of the team’s opening game.
The stadium was destroyed by Russian troops in May 2022 and is part of an interactive installation highlighting that 500 sports infrastructure facilities in Ukraine have suffered from Russian bombings and missile strikes during the two-year war.
