STORYLINE:
(Coney Island, New York)
Where was Takeru Kobayashi?
That was the question on everyone’s mind at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest.
(Arnie Goodman, Kobayashi Fan)
"It was like watching Frazier without Ali."
A contract dispute kept six-time champion Kobayashi out of competition.
But then he showed up in the crowd just as the contest began.
Reigning champ Joey Chestnut easily beat all competition, downing 54 franks in 10 minutes.
But as Chestnut was given the champion mustard yellow belt on the main stage, Kobayashi took a side stage to shake hands with fans.
That’s when police tried to escort him from the stage.
He became agitated and struggled with officers.
Police finally handcuffed a defiant Kobayashi.
His interpreter says it was because they would not let him compete in other competitions.
"There’s a contract dispute so they weren’t giving him his freedom."
Winner Joey Chestnut says he hopes Kobayashi will be back to compete next Fourth Of July.
The NYPD has charged Kobayashi with resisting arrest and trespassing.
