“God willing we will go home from here and perform the sacrifice, first meet my mother, then perform the sacrifice, and then distribute the meat. May Allah accept our sacrifices. We Pakistanis should – Palestinians are our brothers; they are in a lot of pain; the rulers of 56 (Muslim) countries are silent; they are shameless; they have their political interests. But we Pakistanis, Muslims, should do whatever we can to support them.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Hassan Salahuddin, Karachi resident:
“Sacrificing is a tradition of Prophet Ibrahim. The aim of the sacrifice is to affirm that only Allah is the one who provides us everything. He is omnipotent. Allah says in the Quran that He does not need the meat or the blood (of the animals sacrificed). He wants us to follow His commandments. It all depends on our intention, our willingness to sacrifice what is dearest to us for Allah.”

STORYLINE:
Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi gathered Monday for Eid al-Adha prayers in open spaces and in mosques.

One of the biggest Islamic holidays, Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as recounted in the Quran.

Muslims with financial means celebrate this test of faith by slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor.

“Sacrificing is a tradition of Prophet Ibrahim. The aim of the sacrifice is to affirm that only Allah is the one who provides us everything. He is omnipotent,” said Hassan Salahuddin, a Karachi resident.

The Islamic holiday is a joyous occasion which coincides with the final rites of the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

But amid the celebration there was concern for Palestinians suffering from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“Palestinians are our brothers; they are in a lot of pain. The rulers of 56 (Muslim) countries are silent, they are shameless, they have their political interests,” said Moinuddin, another Karachi resident.

Much of Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, observed Eid al-Adha on Monday, while Muslims in other parts of the globe, including Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen celebrated the holiday on Sunday.
