STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the China Coast Guard’s handling of a ship collision incident with the Philippines was professional and restrained.

“On June 17, a Philippine supply ship and two speed boats, without the permission of the Chinese government, intruded into the waters adjacent to Ren’ai Reef in China’s Nansha Islands, and attempted to transport supplies including construction materials to the military vessel illegally grounded at Ren’ai Reef.

The China Coast Guard took necessary control measures against the Philippine ships in accordance with the law, and its maneuver on site was professional, restrained, reasonable and lawful,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Li Jian at a Monday press briefing.

The coast guard said earlier in the day that a Philippine supply ship entered waters near the Ren’ai Reef, the Chinese name of the Second Thomas Shoal, a submerged reef in the Spratly Islands that’s part of territory claimed by several nations. The Philippine military called the Chinese coast guard’s report “deceptive and misleading.”

When asked whether the new regulations announced by the China Coast Guard last week would prompt the Chinese side to use “lethal power” to handle such an incident in the future, Lin didn’t respond directly but said the regulations are in line with internationally accepted practices.

“The implementation of the China Coast Guard Regulations for Administrative Law Enforcement Procedures aims to put into practice the Coast Guard Law, standardize the law enforcement procedures of coast guard organizations to better maintain maritime order, which complies with internationally accepted practices.

Regarding the South China Sea issue, China insists on properly handling sea-related conflicts and disputes through consultations and negotiations with countries directly concerned, and at the same time, China will resolutely respond to any maritime infringement and provocations at sea,” he said.
