"This is a very strong commitment, which incidentally also gives the Ukrainians the courage to do what is now necessary for them to defend their independence and sovereignty. And it is a clear sign to the Russian president that he cannot simply sit this matter out and hope that he will succeed in winning this war at some point because of fiscal problems in some countries in the world that are currently supporting Ukraine. He hasn’t."

“We jointly support this plan by the U.S. President and are also jointly pleased that the Security Council has done the same. Now it is important that everyone implements it. We therefore call on Hamas in particular to give the necessary approval so that this can now work.”

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday called the intention by G7 leaders to mobilize $50 billion from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine a historic step.
“This is a very strong commitment, which incidentally also gives the Ukrainians the courage to do what is now necessary for them to defend their independence and sovereignty,” Scholz told reporters at the summit in Italy.
Scholz added the decision was also "a clear signal to the Russian president that he cannot simply take advantage of a situation and hope that he will succeed in winning this war at some point because of fiscal problems in some countries in the world that are currently supporting Ukraine.”
Scholz also said that the leaders at the summit endorsed U.S. President Joe Biden’s peace plan for the war in the Middle East.
“We jointly support this plan by the U.S. President and are also jointly pleased that the Security Council has done the same," the German Chancellor said.
“Now it is important that everyone implements it. We therefore call on Hamas in particular to give the necessary approval so that this can now work.”
