5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry:
"The U.S. has indiscriminately used unilateral sanctions worldwide and caused troubles, severely undermining the sovereignty and security of other countries, inflicting human tragedies and disrupting the stability of industrial supply chains. Since the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, the U.S. has even doubled down on imposing sanctions. Such an approach does not help solve the problems but only turns into a major source of risks in the world."

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday blasted the United States for sanctioning Chinese companies that are said to help Russia carry out fighting in Ukraine.
The new sanctions, made public on Wednesday, are mainly aimed at deterring individuals and companies in countries including China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey from helping Moscow circumvent Western blocks on obtaining key technology.
Seven Chinese and Hong Kong-based companies were targeted for shipping millions of dollars of material to Russia, including items which could be used in Russian weapon systems.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Thursday said China firmly opposed "unlawful unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction" by the U.S..
"The normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Russia should not be interfered or disrupted or to be used as a tool to smear and contain China," Lin said.
Lin condemned the U.S. for abusing sanctions and undermining the sovereignty and security of other countries.
U.S. officials say China is the leading supplier of critical components to Russia, supplying both Chinese and Western technology.
When asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s purported visit to North Korea soon, Lin refused to comment but said China welcomes Russia to consolidate traditional friendship with relevant countries.
