2. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"In Gaza, we want to obtain the immediate release of the hostages and in this respect, we welcome (the news) of the four Israeli hostages freed today by the Israeli army. We want to achieve an immediate cease-fire and open up the prospect of a political solution capable of creating the conditions for a lasting peace that can meet the security demands of both peoples. This is why we support the United States’ proposal for a comprehensive global agreement. After nine months of conflict, the situation in Rafah and the human toll are unacceptable. It is also intolerable that Israel is not opening all the checkpoints to humanitarian aid as the international community has been demanding for several months, and we reiterate our demand for a cease-fire so that massive aid can get in.”

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday welcomed the announcement by Israel that four hostages had been freed in Gaza.

Standing alongside US President Joe Biden, who was on a state visit to Paris, Macron said he supported US proposals for a cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

‘We want to achieve an immediate cease-fire and open up the prospect of a political solution capable of creating the conditions for a lasting peace that can meet the security demands of both peoples. This is why we support the United States’ proposal for a comprehensive global agreement," Macron said.

"After nine months of conflict, the situation at Rafah and the human toll are unacceptable," he added.

Israel’s army said it rescued Noa Argamani, 25; Almog Meir Jan, 21; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 40, in a complex daytime operation in the heart of Nuseirat on Saturday morning, raiding two locations at once and under fire.

Meanwhile, the bodies of nearly 100 Palestinians killed were taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital on Saturday, where spokesperson Khalil Degran told The Associated Press more than 100 wounded also arrived.

AP reporters saw dozens of bodies brought from the Nuseirat and Deir al-Balah areas, as smoke rose in the distance and armored vehicles rolled by.
