The vice president of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, is dead. He died in the crash of the plane he was traveling in with nine other political figures on Monday. The president of the southern African country, Lazarus Chakwera, said in an address to the nation on Tuesday. The plane crashed in the Chikangawa forest, about 300 kilometers north of the capital Lilongwe. None of the passengers survived.
Chakwera and Chilima have led Malawi’s government since 2020. Chilima was already known as a politician and businessman, heading the Ministry of Ministry of Economy and one of the largest mobile phone providers. He planned to run for president in 2025, local media reported. His party criticized the slow start to the search.
