STORYLINE:
Three Americans appeared alongside dozens of Congolese citizens in a military court Friday on charges of terrorism, attempted assassination, and murder after what Congolese authorities called a “failed coup” attempt on May 19.
Americans Tyler Thompson and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun appeared in court along with the American son of Christian Malanga, Marcel Malanga.
The American Embassy in Congo have said that Congolese authorities have not shared details or provided access to the Americans who were arrested following a coup attempt last month, following pleas for help from one family trying to confirm whether their son was alive.
Christian Malanga, a man who was born in Congo and later moved to the United States, live streamed the May 19 coup attempt in which he stormed the presidential palace with several men in military uniform.
He was killed along with five others during the coup attempt.
The U.S. State Department says one of its highest priorities is providing consular assistance to Americans detained abroad, including regular visits to ensure medical care and assisting with finding an English-speaking lawyer.
