Worldwide meteorological studies show that May 2024 continued to break records for surface air and ocean temperatures, according to the EU’s climate change agency Copernicus.

STORYLINE:

According to the latest set of data released by Copernicus, the EU’s climate change agency, globally May 2024 was warmer than any previous May recorded.

The average air surface temperature was 15.91°C.

That’s 0.65°C above the 1991-2020 average for May and 0.19°C above the hottest May in 2020. 

May’s average temperature was 1.52 °C higher than the estimated preindustrial reference point set out at the Paris climate summit.

It’s the third warmest May in Europe, at 0.88°C above the European average between 1991 and 2020.

Average sea surface temperatures for the month, over 60°S–60°N, were the highest on record for May at 20.93°C.

Sea ice cover in the Arctic was only slightly below average.

It was 8% below average in the Antarctic region – the 6th lowest in the satellite data for May.
