3. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Tomasio, Cleveland resident:
"it was a grueling hike. We do Camelback every time we come here. It was extra hot, so we started extra early. The views were beautiful. We didn’t make it quite to the top because she was a little nervous with the heat. So, I proposed to her when the sun rose right by the benches, right up front. And she waited while I hiked the rest of it.”
4. Mid of Oscar, displays a proposal ring saying, “I should put it on her.”
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Megan McCracken, Cleveland resident:
“We had read, there’s kind of a heat dome going on over the city right now, and we kind of initially said we wanted to do like a sunrise hike. So we woke up probably not early enough, but I think we woke up at like 5 a.m. just knowing we needed to kind of beat the heat. And we heard that there was a new trail closure.”
6. Mid of excessive heat warning and trail closure.
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Megan Wallace, Utah resident:
“And it is hot, that’s for sure. We came down to celebrate her ninth birthday, so we thought we’d come and check out Phenix for a couple of days. Got here last night and it is hot.”
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Eleanor Wallace, Utah resident:
“It’s so hot.”
9. Mid of excessive heat warning and trail closure.
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Megan Wallace, Utah resident:
“The hike was hot, but I feel like we came prepared, and we started early. We knew it was going to be hot. We saw that it was they were closing the hike or the parking lot at nine this morning, so we knew we needed to be finished early. So we started just a few minutes after six and it’s like we came prepared, but we got through all of our water and it was hot, was hotter than we’re used to.”
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Eleanor Wallace, 9, Utah resident:
“But initially, it’s like it’s not as hot.”
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Megan Wallace traveled from Northern Utah to celebrate her daughter’s ninth birthday:
“Yeah.” So, it was still bearable. But we’re glad we started when we did.”

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Tomasio, Cleveland resident:
“Yeah, well, you know what? The sun doesn’t affect me just as much as it does her. But it was it was particularly hot for her. I think that once it hits like 100 degrees, you know, it’s time to be careful.”
16. Various of excessive heat warning sign
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Tomasio, Cleveland resident:
“About three liters. In the pack. I don’t we neither of us ever finish it, but, we always have enough to actually hand out to people, because, surprisingly enough, there are people on the trails who do not carry water. It’s shocking.”

STORYLINE:
The hottest part of the first major heat wave in the U.S. Southwest this year should peak as the sun sets on Thursday.
But the unseasonably hot weather did not prevent Oscar Tomasio from Cleveland, Ohio, from proposing to his girlfriend, Megan McCracken, as they sweltered to the peak of the trails. "it was a grueling hike.” Oscar said.
The heat wave is expected to continue into Friday, cool off a bit over the weekend, and then, well, get hot again.
Both Oscar and Megan carry a three-liter water bottle each, so they have enough water to go up and down the unforgiving hike.
“While a few degrees of cooling is expected this weekend, it will remain quite hot with highs in the 80s and 90s,” the National Weather Service in Reno said.
