STORYLINE:
Tombstones at the Commonwealth war cemetery of Banneville-La-Campagne, in Normandy, France, were lit up on Tuesday during a ceremony as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Each grave was lit in tribute to the fallen, while "Amazing Grace" was sung and musicians from the Pegasus Memorial Band performed.

Dignitaries and veterans of World War II, many of them centenarians, were returning to France this week to commemorate the bloodiest of five Allied landings on June 6, 1944 with various events being held across France throughout the week.

More than 4,400 Allied troops were killed on D-Day, including more than 2,500 Americans. The Allied toll grew appallingly in the Battle of Normandy that ensued, with 73,000 killed and 153,000 wounded.
