STORYLINE:
Hong Kong police continued intense operations into the night on the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown on Tuesday.

Officers were out in force in Causeway Bay, a small but busy shopping district in Hong Kong right next to the venue where locals have marked the anniversary for decades.

One woman, who wore a T-shirt which had the numbers 8964 in roman numerals, the date of the June 4, 1989 crackdown, was seen being taken into a police van by dozens of officers.

China has long quashed any public memory of the military crackdown on months-long protests at the heart of its capital.

Tiananmen memorials were also scrubbed out in Hong Kong — for years the only place in China where they could take place.

In the crackdown an estimated 180,000 troops and police rolled in with tanks and armored vehicles and fired into crowds trying to block them from advancing on the student-led demonstration in the square

Hundreds, if not thousands, are believed to have been killed in an overnight operation that ended on the morning of June 4, 1989.

It was a turning point in modern Chinese history as Communist Party hardliners embraced control instead of political reforms.
