STORYLINE:
Israeli operations in urban refugee camps in central Gaza on Tuesday killed at least 13 people, three children and one woman, Palestinian officials said.

The extent of the offensives on the camps of Bureij and Maghazi was not immediately known.

The dead were brought to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, where an Associated Press journalist counted the bodies and confirmed the details with hospital authorities.

The attack on Bureij killed at least 11 people including two girls, one boy and a woman.

An Israeli military statement claimed it was conducting “a precision operation” targeting Hamas positions in the camp with ground troops backed by airstrikes.

The second strike on a home in Maghazi left two men dead.

Both camps date back to the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were driven out of areas that became part of the new state.

The refugees and their descendants make up most of Gaza’s population.

Israel says it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames Hamas for their deaths because the militant group places fighters, tunnels and rocket launchers in dense, residential areas.

Israeli bombardments and ground operations in Gaza have killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250.

Around 80 hostages captured on Oct. 7 are believed to still be alive in Gaza, alongside the remains of 43 others.
