STORYLINE:
Christ the Redeemer was decorated with a colorful carpet of salt and sustainable materials to celebrate the Catholic holiday of Corpus Christi on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.

This year, the carpet will also represent the 17 Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the United Nations, opening a week of events to celebrate Environment Day on June 5th.

Cardinal Orani Tempesta, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, led the adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, overlooking the city as the day started.

“We honor Christ made present in the Eucharist. We want to have our heart and life prepared to have Christ in it and help the world to be a better place. A way of showing that is to prepare a beautiful carpet for the Eucharist to pass on,” said the Cardinal.

67 volunteers helped to produce the sustainable carpet made of salt, used coffee grounds, egg shells, and sawdust that will be turned into composting material.

Corpus Christi celebrates the tradition and belief of the Holy Eucharist, which, for Christians, represents the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
