"The army entered the city of Ramallah and the market here at night. They stormed money exchange shops that are located next to our shops and the businesses in the market here. They stormed the money exchange shops. Our shops are next to the exchange shops. Some confrontations took place where young men threw stones at them (the army), so they (the army) fired bombs at the market. We do not know what kind of bombs they were. They appeared to be incendiary bombs. And thank God (for everything)."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Tayseer Manasrah, carpet and furnishing shop owner:
"I own four stores here, and on the second floor there are four other stores, so that is eight. And I have two stores at the other end of the market in al-Bireh municipality complex. Thank God, (but) my losses are estimated at more than $3 million. Thank God."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Laila Ghannam, governor of Ramallah:
"It was a real inferno today at the market. The losses are huge but have not counted as of this moment because the civil defense teams are still extinguishing these fires. In full view of the world, which supports the occupier and applies double standards, these markets are burned with weapons that are perhaps American or from other countries that back the occupier. These countries must live up to their responsibilities and stop this ongoing international farce."

STORYLINE:
Firefighters battled blazes in a market in the Palestinian city of Ramallah after an Israeli army raid rendered shops burned and left the site littered with charred produce.

Multiple shop owner Tayseer Manasrah says he woke up to devastating losses on Thursday morning, estimated at $3 million.

"Some confrontations took place where young men threw stones at them (the army), so they (the army) fired bombs at the market," he said.

"We do not know what kind of bombs they were. They appeared to be incendiary bombs," he added.

Ramallah Governor Laila Ghannam said it was too soon to tell how much damage the fires have caused because firefighters were still putting them out.

"In full view of the world, which supports the occupier and applies double standards, these markets are burned," she added.

Violence in the West Bank has surged throughout the war in Gaza, which began in October.

Israel has been conducting raids into Palestinian cities and towns in the territory to crack down on militancy and the incursions have led to the deaths of more than 500 Palestinians.

Most of those killed have been in clashes with the military. But people throwing stones as well as others not involved in the confrontations have also been killed.

Palestinian attacks against Israelis have also been on the rise in the territory.
