"This is an excellent development, and we consider it a crowning achievement for the struggle of the Palestinian people and Palestinian diplomacy. These are member states of the European Union (NOTE: Norway is not a member of the European Union) and NATO, and therefore moving to this level of countries that recognize Palestine is considered a major achievement. I hope that the rest of the European Union countries will follow suit."

"I think this is an excellent development. It gives us complete freedom, a recognized country so that we can have our own currency. It unites us together so that we can get out from under the control of the occupation, which has been controlling everything related to us."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank welcomed the move by Spain, Norway and Ireland after they formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday.

It was a coordinated effort by the three western European nations to add international pressure on Israel to soften its devastating response to last year’s Hamas-led attack.

Tel Aviv slammed the diplomatic move that will have no immediate impact on its grinding war in Gaza.

The flags of Spain, Norway and Ireland were raised alongside the Palestinian flag in front of the municipality building in the West Bank city of Nablus.

"This is an excellent development, and we consider it a crowning achievement for the struggle of the Palestinian people and Palestinian diplomacy," said Ramallah resident Osama Kahil.

While some 140 countries have recognized a Palestinian state — more than two-thirds of the United Nations — none of the major Western powers has done so.

Still, the adherence of three European countries to the group represents a victory for Palestinian efforts in the world of public opinion and will likely put pressure on European Union heavyweights France and Germany to rethink their position.
