“The artificial intelligence revolution has arrived. Many tools enrich our lives. But artificial intelligence is also currently leading to power being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands or companies. And we need to find ways to democratise AI, to make it more welfare-oriented, to build our values into it, so that tomorrow we can trust these systems and not be so dependent on them.”

“But what I think we need to look at, especially from our standpoint – the project I’m working on is with health, is how can health and AI be integrated. And how can ethically, we make sure that all of the opportunities that AI has to offer helps to improve the health of those around the world.”

“Especially when it comes to disinformation, especially in election years, of course, you can always see attempts to undermine democratic processes and stir up more hatred. But AI can also have a positive effect here. We can simply help moderators on communities and platforms to identify hate quickly and take swift action against it, which can also help those affected.”

The annual Re:publica digital festival has started in Berlin – with one major topic dominating the speeches and workshops.

Artificial intelligence can, according to the participants, create a better world – if implemented carefully and correctly.

STORYLINE:

It is one of the largest festivals of its kind in Europe.

Since 2007, Re:publica has been held annually in the German capital Berlin.

Around 25,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event to discuss all aspects of the digitalisation of the world.

"Re:publica is Europe’s largest digital conference on the digital society," says Re:publica co-founder Markus Beckendahl.

This year’s theme is "Who cares?" A play on words with a serious message.

Monica Amponsah is the project coordinator in Ghana.
