STORYLINE:
China’s Premier Li Qiang on Monday said China, Japan and South Korea would resume their negotiation on a trilateral free trade agreement, which was stalled in early 2020 largely due to the pandemic.
The three countries adopted a joint declaration that stressed the need to step up cooperation in “a broad range of areas,” Li said at a press conference in Seoul after meeting with South Korea’s president and Japan’s prime minister in the morning.
Li also called on the three countries to “properly handle sensitive issues and differences, take care of each other’s core interests and major concerns.”
Addressing the Korean Peninsula issue, Li restated China’s commitment to a political resolution and hoped “the parties concerned will exercise restraint and prevent further complications of the situation.”
Monday’s trilateral meeting is the first meeting between China, South Korea and Japan in more than four years.
