"What you saw was a combination of hypotheses for confronting non-traditional threats, such as terrorist organizations, and the usual traditional threats. In this exercise, the work of different forces was combined, forces from the air component and the ground component, from different countries and from different types, such as armored units, artillery, and the air force."

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Brig. Gen. Mustafa al-Hiyari, Jordanian Armed Forces media director, spokesman of the Eager Lion drill:
"This exercise represents the climax of the activity we conduct on an annual basis, and from here we were able to obtain great benefits. The most important of these benefits was the ability of these forces, which you saw today, to work in partnership and organization so that no notable errors emerged. This gives us the strength and possibility to work within alliances against new-era threats."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Lt Col. John Hancher, U.S. army:
"The most important thing, I think, to help countries participating in this exercise is to open communication, the ability to work amongst many different nations that are involved in the exercise. It gets down to, ‘can we work together? Can we organize ourselves and row the relationships so that we’re closer as nations?’"

STORYLINE:
Joint forces from several countries carried out a final maneuver during the Eager Lion exercise in the Jordanian desert.

The drill that finishes last Thursday, included a simulation of an attack on "terrorist organizations" that posed a threat through air and ground forces, according to Brig. Gen. Mustafa al-Hiyari of the Jordanian Armed Forces.

The Eager Lion multinational military drill, with the participation of 33 allied countries, started on May 12.

"This exercise represents the climax of the activity we conduct on an annual basis, and from here we were able to obtain great benefits," al-Hiyari said.

The exercise has been taking place since 2011 and has included maritime and border security drills.

In addition to Jordan and the United States, other countries, including South Africa, France, Germany, Iraq, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, participated in the drill..
