Europe’s far-right: Tempting partners for conservatives? | To the point

Is Europe on the verge of a major shift? Will supporters of Vladimir Putin and friends of China soon have more power in the European Parliament?

According to polls ahead of the European elections, right-wing populists and nationalists are attracting more voters.

But Europe’s far-right is also seeing divisions, between the “Alternative for Germany”, AfD, and the French National Rally Party around Marine Le Pen. How extreme do EU voters want the union to be?

What alliances are being forged? Ursula von der Leyen, the Conservative President of the EU Commission, is openly courting the votes of the Italian head of government Giorgia Meloni and her ultra-right “Fratelli d’Italia”.
