STORYLINE:
Vivid, Australia’s biggest festival, started on Friday evening in Sydney.

The organisers of the the 14th edition of the festival say the event “mixes creativity, innovation and community connection” with artistic events centered on “light installations, music, ideas and food” spanning 23 nights.

This year’s theme is “Humanity”.

Vivid includes concerts, discussions and food from local and international artists and creators.

During the opening evening, a Welcome to Country was performed by a local First Nation group opposite the Sydney Opera House before fireworks were launched all around Circular Quay.

The Opera’s sails, the Harbour bridge and the Central Business District (CBD) were then lit up.

Onlookers present during the opening were in awe of the display.

According to the New South Wales Jobs and Tourism Department, last year’s event attracted “3.48 million attendees generating more than A$206 million ($136 million) in visitor expenditure”.
