STORYLINE:
Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius returned to the Cannes Film Festival to unveil his debut animation "La Plus Précieuse des Marchandises" ("The Most Precious of Cargoes"), in competition.

Hazanavicius’ film premiered with a star-studded red carpet in Cannes on Friday evening, attended by the likes of Dame Helen Mirren, Andie MacDowell and Joey King.

Based on the novel by Jean-Claude Grumberg – who co-wrote the screenplay with Hazanvicius – the WWII story follows a baby thrown by its father from a train bound for Auschwitz, found and brought up by the wife of a woodcutter.

The fairy tale-style animation is narrated by iconic late actor Jean-Louis Trintignant, in his final movie performance before his death in 2022.

The voice cast also includes Dominique Blanc, Grégory Gadebois and Denis Podalydès.

Blanc and Gadebois joined Hazanvicius at the premiere.

A late addition to the competition slate, "The Most Precious of Cargoes" marks the fourth time Hazanavicius has had a film shortlisted for the Palme d’Or, with "The Artist" (2011), "The Search" (2014) and "Godard Mon Amour" (2017) all nominated.

The film is one of 22 competing for this year’s Palme d’Or – the festival’s top prize.

The winner will be announced on Saturday.
