“The requests for arrest warrants against Hamas for war crimes and crimes against humanity are only logical given the atrocities we all know about on 7 October. At the same time, the chief prosecutor also wants to obtain arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and Defense Minister (Yoav) Gallant. I and the German government firmly reject the comparability.”

13. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“What will happen now has to be decided by a panel of judges. We’ll have to wait and see. There is no need to speculate, nor should there be. The German government assumes that when this decision is made, it will take into account the fact that Israel is a democratic constitutional state with a strong and independent judiciary.”

16. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“From my point of view, we have no reason to recognize the PA (Palestinian Authority) as a separate state now. There is no clarity about state territory, about all the other issues involved, but it’s not that far either. What we need is a negotiated solution between Israel and the Palestinians that leads to a two-state solution. And that includes a Palestinian Authority that is responsible for the West Bank and Gaza.”

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday welcomed new Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro for talks in Berlin.
Montenegro was received by Scholz during a welcome ceremony at the German Chancellery before the pair sat down for discussions.
Speaking following the talks Scholz welcomed the arrest warrants being sought by the chief prosecutor of the world’s top war crimes court for the leaders of Hamas following the attack on Israel on October 7.
However he rejected those being sought for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
"The requests for arrest warrants against Hamas for war crimes and crimes against humanity are only logical given the atrocities we all know about on 7 October," he said.
"At the same time, the chief prosecutor also wants to obtain arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant. I and the German government firmly reject the comparability.”
Scholz also commented on the possible future recognition of a Palestinian state.
"We have no reason to recognize the PA (Palestinian Authority) as a separate state now", Scholz said,
"What we need is a negotiated solution between Israel and the Palestinians that leads to a two-state solution. And that includes a Palestinian Authority that is responsible for the West Bank and Gaza.”
