STORYLINE:
Authorities say a deadly tornado that wreaked havoc in the small city of Greenfield, Iowa, left four people dead and nearly three dozen injured, while a fifth person was killed elsewhere. ]

The twister that tore through the city on Tuesday was rated at least an EF-3 by the National Weather Service and was so destructive that it took authorities more than a day to account for the area’s residents.

Officials believe the number of people injured is likely higher.

Kimberly Ergish, 33, said that when the siren sounded she gathered her four kids and went into the basement room.

"It got really quiet and then really loud, and then everything was gone,” she said.

Items fell onto them.

“It was like 10 seconds of pure terror,” she said. “It felt like it lasted a lifetime.”

Everyone escaped with minor injuries.

Ergish and her husband on Wednesday were digging through the debris field that used to be their home, looking for family photos and other things that could be salvaged.

There wasn’t much left, she acknowledged.

“Most of it’s gone,” she said. “Most of it we can’t save. But we’re going to get what we can.”

Ergish and her family have lived in Greenfield eight years.

She’s not certain what happens next.

“It’s a great community,” Ergish said. “I love Greenfield. I love the people in Greenfield." But relocating to the same spot? “I don’t know. It’s kind of traumatizing at the moment.”
