STORYLINE:
China on Thursday defended its military drills around Taiwan as "legitimate and necessary.”
At a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin echoed the military, saying the two-day exercises around Taiwan were a “powerful punishment” for separatist forces seeking independence and a “serious warning” to external interference.
The drills just came days after the inauguration of Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te, who called for Beijing to stop its military intimidation and pledged to “neither yield nor provoke” the mainland Communist Party leadership.
