"I look forward to the day I can come and enjoy it because it really is a pleasure to drive it. And it’s really like entering another dimension. It’s as if you enter a time tunnel and, suddenly, you’re in the year 1912, driving at a different speed, but shifting gears with a lever, totally different. And the brakes, of course, from the year 1912, are different because there weren’t so many cars on the road."

9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Guillermo Bianchi, car club member and representing friend who owns Leyland car:

STORYLINE:
VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

CLASSIC CARS ARE HITTING THE ROADS IN ARGENTINA’S CAPITAL.

HELD IN TRIBUTE TO THE COUNTRY’S FIRST-EVER OPEN-ROAD RACE 118 YEARS AGO, THE GRAN PREMIO RECOLETA-TIGRE FEATURES 35 ANTIQUE VEHICLES, ALL MANUFACTURED BEFORE 1919.

MOST PARTICIPATING CARS STILL HAVE THEIR ORIGINAL DESIGN, COLOR, AND FEATURES, HOWEVER, SOME HAVE BEEN UPDATED IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH MODERN MOTOR LAWS IN BUENOS AIRES.

JORGE LUIS PENEDO HAS REPAIRED AND RESTORED CARS FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS.

HE’S PARTICIPATING WITH HIS CADILLAC ROADSTER FROM 1912, WHICH FEATURES AN EARLY ELECTRIC STARTER MOTOR, A NOVELTY AT THE TIME.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Luis Penedo, car restorer:
"I look forward to the day I can come and enjoy it because it really is a pleasure to drive it. And it’s really like entering another dimension. It’s as if you enter a time tunnel and, suddenly, you’re in the year 1912, driving at a different speed, but shifting gears with a lever, totally different. And the brakes, of course, from the year 1912, are different because there weren’t so many cars on the road."

GUILLERMO BIANCHI IS REPRESENTING A FRIEND WHO OWNS A 1917 LEYLAND.

THE GEARBOX HAS FOUR SPEEDS AND A CHAIN TRANSMISSION.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Guillermo Bianchi, car club member and representing friend who owns Leyland car:
"Generally in these cars, maintenance is easier because they don’t have anything electric, so some old mechanic always knows how to work on them. You just have to be careful with the gasoline."

THE EVENT DOESN’T CROWN A WINNER.

INSTEAD, ALL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE A SMALL TROPHY AT THE FINISH LINE, THEN SPEND THE AFTERNOON AT TIGRE ART MUSEUM.
