(8 Mar 1973) RR7310A ROVING REPORT ISRAELI DEVELOPMENT AT SHARM EL-SHEIK
Cuts available: z034084
Sharm El-Sheik, on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula, has been under Israeli military occupation since 1967. It is an area vital to Israel’s interest since whoever controls it also controls Israeli shipping passing up and down the Gulf of Aqaba from Eilat to the Indian Ocean. Judging from the building work now going on at Sharm, the Israelis are there to stay. The tourist potential is being developed. A new luxury city called Ophira is rising from the desert sand; one thousand housing units, all air-conditioned, with piped water laid on to every apartment, and with its own communal underground bomb shelter.
