STORYLINE:
Flags in the Turkish capital of Ankara and its largest city Istanbul were lowered to half-staff on Tuesday in observance of a national day of mourning in solidarity with Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a day of national mourning following the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s foreign minister and other officials in a helicopter crash.

Erdogan said the day of mourning, announced following a Cabinet meeting, aimed to show that Turkey "shared the deep pain experienced by the Iranian people."

The helicopter crash that killed Iran’s president and foreign minister has sent shock waves around the region.

Iranian state media on Monday said that Raisi, the country’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, and others had been found dead after an hourslong search through a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest.

State TV gave no immediate cause for the crash.

Iran’s theocracy declared five days of mourning, encouraging people to attend public mourning sessions.

It remains unclear what international presence that funeral will draw, as Raisi faced U.S. sanctions for his part in mass executions in 1988 and for abuses targeting protesters and dissidents while leading the country’s judiciary.

Iran under Raisi also shipped bomb-carrying drones to Russia to be used in its war on Ukraine.
