“Donald Trump’s defense team rested its case that the former president’s hush money criminal trial. Now, most notably, former President Trump did not take the stand, did not testify in his own defense. Trump had long said that he wanted to testify, that he wanted to take these allegations of a hush money scheme and reimbursements that were labeled as legal expenses. He wanted to take them head on, but ultimately he and his lawyers decided that he would not testify.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Sisak, The Associated Press:
“Closing arguments in the case won’t be heard until next Tuesday. That’s the day after Memorial Day. Now, the judge says that once he gives those instructions, it’ll take about an hour. And then deliberations could start as early as next Wednesday.”
STORYLINE:
The defense rested its case in Donald Trump’s hush money trial on Tuesday morning without the former president taking the witness stand to testify, bringing proceedings one step closer to closing arguments.
Jurors could begin deliberating as soon as next week to decide whether Trump is guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Prosecutors have accused Trump of a scheme to bury negative and often salacious stories that might have torpedoed his 2016 presidential campaign and then falsifying internal business records to cover up hush money payments associated with the alleged scheme. He has denied the allegations.
