The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will decide on South Africa’s plea calling on Israel to halt its military offensive in Gaza. South Africa wants the court to order Israel to stop its operations particularly in Rafah, arguing that it was necessary to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people. Israel says its Rafah offensive is necessary to root out the last remaining Hamas fighters. It has suggested it will not comply with any order to stop fighting. The court has no way to enforce its ruling but the case adds further international pressure on the Israeli government.
