3. SOUNDBITE (Albanian) Besiona Simoni, warden at Vain Lagoon: ++AUDIO AS INCOMING++
“Since July 7, 1940 this lagoon is a first-grade protected area in Albania and since that time until now it enjoys the status of a natural reserve of the fourth category. In fact, the multiplicity at the habitat and its natural characteristics of the lagoon have made it a very important zone for the birds. Its ornithological values no doubt have made it possible to have here many diverse species.”

“This area is very quiet and nice views, beautiful. But in the infrastructure, it’s nice. It’s okay. You can bike here. You can drive by car. You can walk. And I even saw you can camp here and a lot of restaurants but not very busy."

13. SOUNDBITE (Albanian) Taulant Bino, Albanian Ornithological Society:
“Despite the values they have they still feel threatened and we believe that the main threat, especially during the last years and more so after 1990, is the increasing urbanisation near them and the increasing pressure of urbanisation linked to many other factors like disturbance, pollution, illegal hunting and so on.”

15. SOUNDBITE (Albanian) Taulant Bino, Albanian Ornithological Society:
“There is not a clear impact of climate change and I would say that is worth doing for the region too. There are no detailed reports of studying the climate change impact on the water birds we monitor, especially during the winter period. But I believe that a small impact comes from that (climate change) because with the climate warming, with the increase of temperatures the migratory birds need not move further to the south as they can find food reserves more to the north.”
