Taiwan’s president visits military base, vows to protect island amid China’s military drills

Taiwan’s President said on Thursday he would "stand on the front line" with soldiers, as he scrambled jets and put the self-governed island democracy’s missile, naval and land units on alert following Chinese military drills.

President Lai Ching-te, who took office this week, made the comments during a visit to a military base in Taoyuan on Thursday.

China’s military said its two-day exercises around Taiwan were punishment for separatist forces seeking independence.
