2. SOUNDBITE (English) Henna Ayesh, student at DePaul University:
"Today, DePaul calls CPD to attack the encampment in the name of safety. But it was the students who have continuously faced hostility from Zionist counter protesters and other racist groups. The administration did not offer a plan to protect the students at the encampment from the potential attacks. It is clear DePaul only cares about their pocketbooks, not about students and certainly not about Palestinian lives. But we will not stop. While the tents have gone the sentiment of divestment has not left with it, and this will not end until DePaul divest. So join us in holding DePaul accountable. I urge you to email or call administration to condemn the violent attacks on students and call for divestment."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rabbi Brant Rosen, Congregration Tzedek Chicago:
"I am here today representing the rapidly growing section of the Jewish community that is actively protesting Israel’s genocidal violence against the Palestinian people. As part of this protest, we stand with the student movements across the country and around the world that are demanding their schools divest from Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and throughout Palestine. It has been my personal honor to visit the DePaul Liberation Zone numerous times over the past two weeks. Together with members of my congregation, we led to havdalah services, the ceremonies that marked the end of the Jewish Sabbath. We were invited and scheduled to lead Shabbat services at the student encampment tomorrow evening, and we are deeply saddened that this will now not be possible. When I led havdalah, I made the observation that Jewish tradition views Shabbat as a foretaste of the world to come. And I added that this is exactly what the students were creating in their encampment. The students of DePaul created for themselves the world as it should be in real time. In truth, it felt to me less a political protest encampment than a mindfully organized, genuine grassroots community."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rabbi Brant Rosen, Congregation Tzedek Chicago:
"And I want to say as clear as I possibly can, that the cynical characterization of this encampment and others like it across the country as bastions of Jew hatred, could not be further from the truth. As a Jewish person, I was welcomed into this community as an honored guest."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of students and supporters gathered on Thursday evening in front of DePaul University to voice their disagreement with the way a pro-Palestinian encampment was dismantled.

Police began dismantling the encampment early Thursday, hours after the school’s president told students to leave the area or face arrest.

Officers and workers in yellow vests cleared out tents at the student encampment as front-loaders removed the camping equipment.

In a gathering on Thursday evening, DePaul University student Henna Ayesh stated that "while the tents have gone, the sentiment of divestment has not left with it."

Among the supporters was Rabbi Brant Rosen of Tzedek Chicago, who spoke at the press conference put together by students.
