4. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Vox pop – Kwon Dohyun, university student – on why he has been attracted to Buddhism
“First of all, isn’t the hairstyle (of monks) really hip? Monks are very pleasant and generous. There are sentiments of hatred and discrimination in South Korean society, but Buddhist monks are very inclusive, and I think that seems very hip.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Youn Sung Ho "NewJeansNim," DJ/comedian – on inspiration behind his monk alter ego
"This is my alter ego. In South Korea, alter ego characters have been popular, so I created this character, and that’s how NewJeansNim was born.”
(Reporter: “But where did you get the inspiration for the character?”)
“Last year, I was DJ-ing at the lantern-lighting ceremony as comedian Youn Sung Ho, my authentic self, my original self, and many people saw it and posted it on social media. It got one million, two million, three million, four million views because it was the first time they had seen a monk DJ-ing. I wasn’t NewJeansNim at the time. I was Youn Sung Ho. I was just my authentic self. But I wore a hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), which looked like a monk’s robe. It got a lot of views, so that’s when I thought, ‘Oh, I need to make a character quickly.’”

12. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Youn Sung Ho "NewJeansNim," DJ/comedian – on why he thinks his monk alter ego went viral and became popular
“That’s because there’s never been a character like this before. The ‘MZ’ generation wants to break the mold. They wanted something new, and I broke this mold. It was so new and exciting to them to see someone making electronic music and making people jump, jump, in this serious, solemn religion of Buddhism. I think that’s why the reaction from the ‘MZ’ generation has been explosive.”
