STORYLINE:
Thousands of people marched through Mexico City on Wednesday to mark Nakba day and to show their support for Palestinians as the war in Gaza rages on.

Demonstrators waving green, white, black and red Palestinian flags packed the city’s main avenue to mark the 76th anniversary of Palestinians’ mass expulsion from what is now Israel.

Some 700,000 Palestinians fled or were driven from their homes before and during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that followed Israel’s establishment.

Palestinians refer to the historic event as the Nakba, Arabic for catastrophe.

Now, many Palestinians fear a repeat of their painful history on an even more cataclysmic scale.

The war in Gaza has killed over 35,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, making it by far the deadliest round of fighting in the history of the conflict.

Some 1.7 million Palestinians have fled their homes, often multiple times.

Israeli leaders have said the Palestinian refugees should be absorbed by neighboring Arab states or in a future Palestinian state. The fate of the refugees was a major point of contention in peace talks going back to the 1990s.

Protesters called on Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to break diplomatic ties with Israel.

The leftist leader has called for peace but ruled out severing relations with Tel Aviv.
