STORYLINE:
Slovak residents shared their reactions in the country’s capital on Thursday the morning after the assassination attempt against Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Fico was in a stable but serious condition on Thursday after being shot multiple times a day earlier, a hospital official said.

The government said five shots were fired at Fico on Wednesday outside a cultural center where he was meeting with supporters.

The assassination attempt dominated local and international news outlets.

Zuzana Eliasova, Bratislava resident, called the attempt an "attack on democracy".

She hoped that the incident will make people "look into their conscience because the polarisation here has been huge among all different parts of society."

Another resident condemned the assassination attempt, saying that it was "no way to deal with the current situation".

A suspect was in custody, and an initial investigation found “a clear political motivation” behind the assassination attempt, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said Wednesday.

Fico has long been a divisive figure in Slovakia and beyond, but his return to power last year on a pro-Russian, anti-American message led to even greater worries among fellow European Union members that he would lead his country further from the Western mainstream.
