STORYLINE:
Francis Ford Coppola and his stars lingered on the red carpet at the end of the screening for his latest film "Megalopolis," on Thursday night.

The cast included Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Adam Driver Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Chloe Fineman and Nathalie Emmanuel.

Described as a Roman epic fable, "Megalopolis" unfolds in an imagined modern America, as Cesar Catilina and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero clash over the future of their City of New Rome. Torn between them is the mayor’s daughter Julia Cicero, who loves Cesar, dividing her loyalties.

“Megalopolis,” which Coppola first began conceiving in the early 1980s, cost a reported $120 million to make. Coppola put up his money with the help of his wine empire to realize the passion project.

The epic marks the fourth time the director has presented a film in competition in Cannes.

The 85-year-old filmmaker won the Palme d’Or in 1974, with "The Conversation." His "Apocalypse Now" also won the top prize in 1979, sharing it that year with Volker Schlöndorff’s “Die Blechtrommel."

"Megalopolis" is one of 22 films competing for the Palme d’Or this year. The winner will be decided by a jury presided over by Greta Gerwig.
