STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, in the latest show of unity between the two authoritarian allies against the U.S.-led Western liberal global order.
Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced the official visit during a phone briefing with reporters Tuesday.
"Today we announced President Putin’s upcoming official visit to China on Thursday and Friday this week," Peskov said.
Answering a reporter’s question on whether Sergei Shoigu’s appointment as Head of Russia’s Security Council can be considered a step down in rank, Peskov insisted that Shoigu’s new position is "of great importance for the country."
On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law the "Russian Uranium Import Ban" bill previously passed by the U.S. Congress.
