Live: South Africa asks top UN court to stop Israel’s Rafah offensive | DW News

South Africa is asking the UN’s top court to order Israel to stop its offensive in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.

The hearing is part of a broader case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, which Israel has repeatedly denied.

The International Court of Justice will hear arguments from South Africa’s lawyers on Thursday, with Israel giving its response on Friday.

Earlier this month, the South African government petitioned the court to order Israel to "immediately withdraw and cease its military offensive."

It also asked the court to order Israel to allow unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip for aid groups, UN officials, as well as investigators and journalists.

South Africa began its case against Israel at the ICJ in January, accusing the country of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel has denied the accusation, calling it "grossly distorted" and saying that the case was an effort to "pervert the meaning" of the term genocide.
