STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of Yemenis joined a recurring Friday demonstration in Sanaa in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators chanted slogans while holding Palestinian and Yemeni flags, machine guns and placards.

"We say to the people of Gaza that we are with you, even if for thousands of years. Gaza is in our hearts, it’s in our blood," said protester Yasser Ibrahim.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have organised protests nearly every Friday since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7.

The Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea since November, saying they want to force Israel to end its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The ships targeted by the Houthis, however, largely have had little or no connection to Israel, the U.S. or other nations involved in the war.

The rebels have also fired missiles toward Israel, though they have largely fallen short or been intercepted.

Israel’s ongoing air, sea and ground offensive in Gaza has killed more than 35,000 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and levelled large parts of the enclave.

It was launched in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack into Israel, in which militants killed around 1,200 people and abducted around 250 others.

The Houthis have sunk one vessel and killed three crew members across dozens of attacks.
