STORYLINE:
Budapest residents were met with road closures and increased security during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit as groups of his supporters and critics gathered in various points of the city to demonstrate.

Hundreds of people gathered near the city’s Buda Castle waving Chinese and Hungarian flags, hoping to catch a glimpse of Xi’s motorcade.

Liu Yanchun, from the Chinese city of Chengdu and currently working at Chinese factory in Central Hungary, said that some in the Chinese community in Hungary were eager to meet Xi.

This was Xi’s first visit to Europe in five years, a trip which aimed to solidify China’s economic footprint in the region.

He arrived in Hungary late Wednesday after visiting Serbia and France.

Beijing has invested billions in Hungary and sees the European Union member as an important foothold inside the 27-member trading bloc.

Hungary and China have signed agreements to deepen their economic and cultural cooperation.
