STORYLINE:
The Madrid regional presidency building was lit up in blue on Thursday to mark Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9, as the critical European parliamentary elections loom ever larger.

The elections portend a steep rise of the far right and a possible move away from the bloc’s global trendsetting climate policies.

"Of course, what happens in one country affects us all, that is logical; the war in Ukraine , all the other things that are happening in the world. So we hope that people can choose the best they can,” Carmen Velandela said.

Tomas Caballero, a retired Spaniard, said he was β€œmore worried about (the elections) here, for example the elections that we will have in Catalonia. I think that they are very important because we don’t know how they are going to end up. Europe, well not, sure."

EU elections hardly caused a ripple for decades, but the June 6-9 elections are gearing up to be the most important in living memory due to the compounding crises on a continent facing war in Ukraine, climate emergencies, a shifting geopolitical landscape and fundamental questions on the reach and purpose of the EU itself.
