STORYLINE:
As authorities in southern Brazil rushed to rescue survivors of massive flooding that has killed at least 100 people, some residents refused to leave belongings behind.
Carlos Sampaio lives above his sports themed bar, on a street facing Grêmio Football Club’s massive stadium.
Flood waters almost covered the whole ground flood, but he refuses to leave because of fear of looting after the disaster.
“I’m analyzing how much safety I have and I know that my belongings have no safety at all. As long as I can fight for what is mine, within my condition of not exposing myself, I’ll fight.”
More than 230,000 people have been displaced, and much of the region has been isolated by the floodwaters.
A report by the National Confederation of Municipalities estimates damages at 4.6 billion reais ($930 million) in nearly 80% of Rio Grande do Sul’s municipalities.
