Forty rescuers struggled in a swamp to save two horses trapped in the thick mud. The drama started when a local fire department got a call that the horses were stuck deep in the woods near a farm in Lebanon, Connecticut. Volunteers hauled in ropes, wood, saws, food, water and other equipment. The horses were filthy but alive. The animals were said to be "in mild distress" but very soon were "happily eating fresh hay."
