STORYLINE:
Some members of Hungary’s Chinese community travelled to Budapest on Thursday to show support for Chinese President Xi Jinping who is visiting.
Xi arrived to Hungary’s capital yesterday for talks with Hungarian officials which are expected to result in further Chinese investments in the Central European country.
"We think Mr. Xi Jinping is a greater president. He’s a great leader, not only in the economy, but also in others. We think that Mr. Xi Jinping can bring our life better and better.”, said Gao Xiang, a Xi supporter.
Gao Xiang works for a Chinese factory in Szolnok, central Hungary and traveled to Budapest to show his support.
Xi, who arrived in Hungary late Wednesday, will hold talks later in the day with Hungary’s right-leaning Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Beijing is a big investor in Hungary and sees the EU member country as an important foothold inside the 27-member trading bloc.
Hungary is the first EU member to participate in Xi’s signature Belt and Road Initiative that seeks to build billions of dollars of roads, ports, power plants and other infrastructure across Asia, Africa and beyond.
Orbán was the only EU leader to attend a conference in Beijing on the BRI, which has been criticized for burying participating countries in debt and failing to deliver on promised investments, something that prompted Italy to drop out last year.
