"We’re looking at homes throughout this community that are totally gone. They’ve been demolished. We know people were in some of those homes. We’ve found homes on their side and upside down."

"There are several homes beyond the five that we’re standing amongst that have been totally destroyed. What I can tell you about injuries is that, right now, we’re confirming that 16 number of people that were injured and taken to the hospital. Their injuries were all minor enough that it looks like everyone’s going to be out of the hospital today."

"A tornado went through, and then about 45 minutes later, another tornado, almost on the direct same path was coming through. So as emergency responders and citizens were standing in these streets trying to help one another, we were alerted a second tornado was coming in."

"People just started showing up. As soon as the tornado was gone, people whose homes were intact came out to help those whose weren’t. And that started within minutes."

STORYLINE:
Three tornadoes have been confirmed in Michigan as severe storms barreled through the central U.S.,

National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal says Wednesday that the tornadoes in Michigan touched down one each in Kalamazoo, Cass and Branch counties โ€” all in the southwestern part of the state.

Kalamazoo Countyโ€™s Portage area was hard hit, and more than a dozen mobile homes destroyed.

Tornadoes were first reported after dark Tuesday in parts of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, while portions of Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri were also under a tornado watch.
