STORYLINE:
Students of the University of Amsterdam gathered in large groups around the university building on Tuesday to protest the ongoing war in Gaza.
Student demonstrators marched in large groups, barricaded the road in front of the university, carrying placards in support of Gaza and chanting slogans such as "Free Palestine" and "Occupation no more."
Some students were seen wearing keffiyehs and carrying Palestinian flags.
On Monday, riot police broke up a pro-Palestinian demonstration camp at the university, beating some of the protesters and pulling down tents.
Police said on the social media platform X that the action was “necessary to restore order” after protests turned violent.
In a statement, the University of Amsterdam said: “We share the anger and bewilderment over the war, and we understand that there are protests over it. We stress that within the university, dialogue about it is the only answer.”
Student protests have started spreading across Europe but remain smaller in scale compared to those seen in university campuses around the U.S.
