"(Chinese) President Xi (Jinping) is actually in Paris now and we consider that whatever we do as a country, the president should not be treated as a guest of honor like any other. He’s a press freedom predator and he is currently responsible for the jailing of 119 journalists, either in the Republic of China or in Hong Kong."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Thibaut Bruttin, Reporters Without Borders Deputy Director General:
“So, of course, President Xi’s welcome to France but we think that these questions of press freedom, of jailing journalists, of exporting propaganda should be dealt with by the exchanges, the conversations between the two heads of state and also the president is welcome in France but RSF is not welcome in China and on April 10, one of our colleagues were expelled from Hong Kong. So, we consider that, really, this should be dealt with as a priority matter in all conversation with the Chinese president."

STORYLINE:
Members of the group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) protested against Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to France outside the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Monday.

Xi "is currently responsible for the jailing of 119 journalists, either in the Republic of China or in Hong Kong," said Thibaut Bruttin, Reporters Without Borders Deputy Director General.

The protesters were gathered next to a placard listing the names of the 119 journalists and a truck showing an image of French President Emmanuel Macron and Xi.

France is the first stop on a European trip by Xi aimed at rebuilding relations at a time of global tensions.

After France on Monday and Tuesday, the Chinese leader will head to Serbia and Hungary.

Macron will seek to press Xi to use his influence to move Russia toward ending the war in Ukraine during the two-day state visit to France.

Both leaders were also expected to discuss trade disputes over electric cars, cognac and cosmetics.
